That the emotional needs and desires of individuals undadressed, unfulfilled, or outright denied by a society, contributes to its own downfall. Though rarely in such dramatic terms. Perhaps a better way of looking at it would be paradigm shifts. Sudden, drastic upheavals within a culture when the old guard comes to a head with the newer idea. The End of the Samurai culture in Japan, the French revolution.
Ideas which run contrary to this biological mandate are integral in generating social change over time (in addition to environmental and economic factors)
I know I'm not explaining it very well (bear with me I haven't been sleeping well) but it can be boiled down (sort of) to the idea that happy, well-adjusted people have a tendency to raise, happy, well-adjusted children. Likewise, happy, well-adjusted communities have a tendency to generate, happy, well-adjusted families, and vice versa.
To get it back to the central topic, if you've got a couple engaged in a one-sided abusive relationship and even if they don't reproduce, their interaction will have a disquieting effect on the community. Enough unstable relationships invariably generate enough people who will agitate for change, resulting in cultural shifts. Simply put, the health of the community depends on the health of every individual (even infinitesimally), so how does okaying the physical abuse of an entire sex help the community stay together? |
