many of the folk who came over after the initial wave weren't landowners, so owning slaves was a new concept to them (not that they were unfamiliar with it ... Only that they were not used to having slaves *themselves*). As such, most of them had simply learned to make to without slaves.
As the numbers of THOSE people grew (mostly in the North), the paradigm started to change. More and more of them started getting into politics and other positions within the community, and those who were for slavery became fewer and fewer. Look at US presidents like Pierce. He was a Northerner who was a racist and very much in favour of slavery.
The North still had people who wanted slaves, but they were now in a growing minority.
The South was a very different ball of wax. Those who wanted slaves were not necessarily in the majority, but they controlled all the important political power. That's what led to the slave part of the war (though, it wasn't the only thing).
The north had a paradigm shift simply because the political power moved from one group to another. The North then imposed their views on the south, which ended up helping to start the civil war.
