At least for evil spirits, rather than the groom.
To clarify, I thought that the bridesmaids' traditional (multi-cuenturies ago) purpose was to be a decoy for any evil spirits that might be coming along to curse the marriage (cause, y'knw, that always happens through the woman, right?). The more, the better, of course.
And then, there's the whole veil thing. With a decent veil, you actually don't know who the heck you're actually marrying until you raise it for the kiss. Too late then if it was the wrong one! |
