But the farther government reaches, the more potential for inefficiency and corruption there is. Any talk of cleaning out the rats in NOLA is met with a cheap flash of the race card.
Capitalism is not a perfect system- but it does get the most things "done." I'll spare you the obvious Adam Smith quote. But I do not see charging a higher rate to work in worse conditions, to be "taking advantage of people." There are a certain amount of tradesmen available in a given area. Their FIRST priority is going to be their own homes and families' homes...when price/money offered cannot be a consideration, the personal connections WILL be. How is THAT fair?
To me, the most "fair" outcome would be whatever gets the most tradesmen down there to fix the area, ASAP. Not going to happen, with price controls. You cannot just FORCE tradesmen come to an area to work. You have to offer an incentive. "Christian charity" will get a tradesman from here to work down there for 2 weeks. Honest capitalism, and higher wages, will bring him down there for several months, at least.
