I'm thinking that one is Alyssa's mother by birth, but that her
parents were divorsed along the way, and the 'other mom' would
probably be daddy Dave's 2nd wife, and therfore Alyssa's mom
for the last several years.

(just a guess)

Although, it does pose a decision of "which mom is placed first?"
because somebody is not going to be happy as the "2nd mom", no
matter which way things are arranged.
