You have options. by werehatrack 2007-04-30 11:32:13
First, be aware that no matter what method is used to reset the codes, you'll have to drive the vehicle far enough for it to have an acceptable runtime sample before the vehicle can pass OBD-II-based emissions inspection. This distance varies; I've seen it take several hundred miles before the vehicle could pass.

It may not be necessary to clear the codes anyway. Drive the vehicle for four or five trips of a few miles each, and the code may clear by itself as the error condition remains unrepeated for that time.

If the code does not clear by itself, then there are several things that you can do. Clearing the codes can be done by a battery disconnect, as suggested elsewhere. This has some downsides; you have to reset all your radio pretune buttons, for one thing. Many auto parts stores besides Autozone also will scan and/or clear the codes, but here's a bit of advice they won't know about for your *specific* error. Once the "clear codes" command has been sent, DO NOT start the engine without turning the ignition off and disconnecting the scan tool first. I've run across several comments on car forums to the effect that this specific error code results from the need to retrain the system concerning the rest position value for the EGR pintle position sensor, and restarting the vehicle after the code has been cleared apparently can cause an erroneous (old) position value to remain in use...and the code pops up again as a result. I haven't tried to verify whether the battery disconnect trick will get around all of this or not.

I worked for AutoZone for a while; oddly enough, I tend to buy my parts at OReilly's and Advance more often than not.
