Drive slower means both accelerating slower and driving at a slower speed than you normally would. Aerodynamic drag scales as the square of speed (in the limit of high velocity). This means that every doubling of speed (above a certain point) represents a 75% drop in fuel economy. Of course, the actual drop with speed increase depends on what speed is your reference. Peak fuel economy is probably in the range of 40-50mph. If you go 75mph, expect roughly 25% more fuel consumption than going 50. If you go the *minimum* safe speed on the highways, you'll use less fuel.
