My preference is/was to find a club involved with something I enjoy. Being shy/introverted/anti-social/whatever, it had the distinct advantage that I could focus on the activity first and do the "meet and greet" at a slower, less threatening pace.

Obligatory testimonial: I joined the SCA after college, because it seemed interesting. 7 years later I married someone I met there.
