Next time, shall we NOT offer help to the US? by klaranth2007-04-30 02:30:56
The "gummint" on all levels has failed by lab rat 2007-04-30 09:25:12
miserably in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita. Although there were a few instances of competence (the rescue of some 30,000 people by the coast guard)many fell far into the realm of idiocy.

I'll start at the bottom. The idiots that did not leave town when told to do so. Happens every season. They know the gummint is going to bail their sorry azzes out. Gee why do it myslef when someone else will. Many of these have not returned because the gov't is still taking care of them in other cities. Rescue effort were then made all the more difficult to rescue folks from nursing homes, hospitals (i.e. My Mom and Stepfather), the very old and the very young who actually do need someone to care for them. Grrr.

Local level. Much of the monies/goods that has not been claimed is the result of the ineptness of the gummint officials in either the application to acquire these thing from the state or the federal gummint. NOLA has a long history corruption and if there's a sneaky/underhanded way to do something they will find it.

State level. Same as above with a certifiable moron at the helm. Blanco has done nothing with any level of competence. Before, during or after. There are still billions sitting in Washington that the state has not claimed. Meanwhile Blanco complains that the money is not flowing...? I don't get it either.

Federal level. Can you say red tape. It's no surprise that much of the foreign aid was redirected, pledged or otherwise and sent to private organizations. Sometimes I think everything the gov't touches turn to s4. Thousands of morons only make worse what hundreds of morons have already done.

Private charities have done quite well in getting aid to people. The gov't is just not equipped to do so. I don't even think they should be in that business because they're so bad at it, probably by design.

Now will this rise to the level malfeasance? I don't know. Would surprise me if it did.

What is to be done? I dunno, but keeping the government out of the nanny business is a start. I know that when I was volunteering at the Red Cross we helped thousands of people from the tiny Pensacola office. We had to move to a huge Baptist Church to handle the work load. WE gave out clothes, food and water. Provided temporary housing, medical care and issued checks. All very efficiently. If you showed up you left with food, water and clothing for your family that day. </rant>

BTW, I am unsinged...
