How dare people charge what their work might actually be worth.

Under the "free" market, workers are only going to jump in if they make an acceptable profit TO THEM. If you're going to fight for hotel space or live in an RV, work away from family, AND haul in a lot of your own materials...you're gonna expect a higher rate than just working the jobs available close to home.

Impose an artificial ceiling on the price, and the people who accept it are going to cut corners to make the profit "acceptable" to them. And so homeowners are limited to the guy doing a job half-a3ed, rather than getting to CHOOSE between "cheap" and "My brother in law up North does a good job, if enough of us sign up we can get him down here a while and done right..."
