Electricity versus gasoline: clean the terminals! by etwas_egal 2007-04-30 07:52:59
*If* the battery recharge is efficient, the electrical in a car uses a minisule amount of gas: see my note about the solar panel.

If the battery recharge is inefficient, than the alternator pulls a bunch of power off the engine and you then push it harder to drive the same. What commonly causes poor recharge? Dirty electrical contacts that increase the wire resistance, frayed wires, and conductive dirt "bridges" on either the alternator contacts or the battery terminals. Things to do? Wiggle and reseat the wires for good contact. Wipe off the top of the battery between the posts.

These also help prevent certain mechanics from replacing a perfectly good alternator.
