Starting the engine uses a lot more electrickery to turn the starter motor. Therefore the motor needs to charge the battery back up.
The bigger problem, in the long term, is lose of oil pressure. You turn it off, the oil pump stops. Leak down means some things are not as lubed as they should be. You'll see a lot of engine oil adverts that assure you that "most engine wear occurs at start up". That's due to the lower oil pressure.
One suggestion for fuel economy might be to use a less viscose oil, if that's possible.
