The AC is the only extra which will use any significant fraction of the engine power. My little Micra has a 64kW engine, and the generator will produse 50A @12W, which means maximum 0.6kW.
That means that all electricity consumed on the verge of overload will be 0.9% of engine power. I am perfectly happy with the sound level when the radio is using less than 1A, and that is only 0.1% of the power it takes to coast at low speed.

The other energy waster in many cars is the automatic transmission, but that is something you only can influence at the time of purchase. Apparently, the US efficiency tests are set up so that manual cars are shifted as inefficiently as possible. This gives the bogus result that traditional automatic transmissions seem relatively efficient. Could this have something to do with the industry wanting to sell more expensive stuff which needs more maintenance?
