Algiz (upright at least) is a defensive rune, while reversed it means a total defensive failure, stress that brings the entire structure down. While Calc is a rune of death, change, and represents the underworld and ultimate rebirth. In the younger futhark the symbol is Yr and represents martial skill as well as the power of life and death in a very human sense. If the Peace sign were intentionally based on a rune I'd have picked Berkana, spring, birth, the great mother, the house and family.
