| *why* do I attract idiot IT people??? (long rant) |

I've posted before about the not-so-bright IT folks at work. You know, the ones who send tech questions to me (in a non-tech position), who have assured me that I don't need a firewall on my work laptop unless I visit pr0n sites and who informed me that Linux is overrated and that Apache is better? Well, it appears that I somehow attract all the moron IT people to my world.
I am the volunteer webmaster for a non-profit organization. The person who is actually managing the server is the manager of web services for a small, private university in the eastern US. The decision was made some time ago to move the website from one service provider to another. I was assured that I would be kept informed about this.
This morning, I discovered that the website has apparently been moved to the new server. And that all the images are broken as are the javascript toolbar and all the internal links. Surprise!!!! The listserv is also messed up, there appears to be no spam control on incoming mail to said listserv and I can't access the administrative page to fix that.
I called the website owner. He says "I guess you heard we're 'transitioning'." I said I know that the site is almost completely broken and that there are many ways of moving sites seamlessly. He replies that he doesn't know why that wasn't done, but that he's left messages. I also tell him that I no longer have server access to the live site so will be completely unable to work with the site. He says ok. (I fully expect it to be after mid-May before I get any server login information.)
It's now three hours later. The site is still broken. The areas which were password protected are now in the clear. Of course, the pages in the password protected area are actually fully live and available to the public now. Fortunately it's not personal information being compromised.
I may not be a professional computer person or even have taken a formal course in how to manage websites or any other computer thing, but I darned well know better than to destroy a site live. Surely someone who is the manager of web services for the Office of Information Tech at a University ought to know about creating a testbed under a hidden top level domain to verify everything is working BEFORE changing the domain redirect (and would have actually TESTED it before changing said domain redirect). Reality: Apparently not
This individual apparently even has STUDENTS available to do the work for him and can't get it done right. I could have done it all by myself at night after my real job and gotten it tested and ready to go within a week. This is NOT rocket science!!!
I am beginning to think that the IT folks at my day job were trained by the IT folks at my volunteer job. And that the flashing sign over my head which encourages idiot psychos to ask me out on dates is also telling the idiot IT people of the universe to work with me. I should hire myself out to tech companies to help weed out the morons.
/me ends rant and goes outside to dig holes in the yard before I start banging my head on the keyboard. |
