Orbitz disaster by BigBrosHelper 2007-04-26 19:18:29
#names changed for privacy
My roommate (Jack) and his gf (Jill) were trying to skip town on Friday, and this (Thursday) afternoon Jill got an email staying that her request to cancel the flights had gone through and her account had been credited for the airfare less some fees. Only trouble was neither Jack nor Jill cancelled the flights.
Many panicked phone calls later, Jill found out that her Dad had called and cancelled a seperate flight earlier that week. Turns out Orbitz authenticates based on last name and billing zip code, and Dad's stomping around through the automated system had cancelled J&J's reservation before he spoke to a rep and was able to cancel his.
It took J&J five hours of phone calls to Orbitz, and getting hung up on four times in six calls, plus a panicky call to Dad to discover what had happened. At that point, they were offered the option of paying ~1month rent to rebook their flights, an amount which would be credited back to them IF they happened to record Dad's conversation three days ago.
Two questions:
(1) Has something like this happened to anyone else, and how did you resolve it?
(2) Should I change my name so that I'm sure no one in my zip code has it?
