...Your graphics driver is installed, right? Speaking from my WinXP experience, without a driver, the graphics system can't tell you what resolutions and color depths it can achieve. So it goes with the only thing the graphics system can provide on its own. Without drivers, I've found XP will only do 640x480 with 256 colors. It knows no other flavor. I don't know if whatever X server Gnome uses does that, but it's something to think about.
