Most rocky planets are believed to have a "sunside" and a "darkside" - has to do with the mechanics of planetary formation.

Gas giants are subject to other forces which modify the rotational speed of the planet; such forces typically have a negligible effect on rocky planets. Our Earth is theorized to have such a short "day" (rapid rotation) due to a planetary collision some four-billion years ago.
