it's just not legal in the us, because the DMCA makes it illegal to bypass the copy protection. (as far as I know, the DMCA has no "fair use" clause, in fact it closed quite a few of them)

as far as the dvd conversion, have a look at autogk, it won't rip the dvd for you but it will do all the conversion stuff for you, you just need to tell it how big you want the resulting file. (the 2 cds setting works really well for dvd rips of average length)

Note that it does default to doing the audio as mp3, meaning you lose the 5.1ness of the audio. However there is a setting where you can tell autogk to preserve the original audio track
