My cycle headlamp is 5× LED and rated at 40,000 MCD. It runs on 2× AA for about 4 months. On the full on setting it gets 90 hours off a pair of rechargables. On a fresh pair it's blinding at closer than five feet. Plus given the life of the LED's their biggest worries are corrosion and proton decay.

All the signal lights in the area (train and traffic) were switched to LED a few years back. Plenty bright, any hour of the day.
