From an RP story I posted last year.
'Beware the devil you know.' An overused axiom for, surprisingly, more light-hearted times. I never knew just how dire a warning it could be, and here standing at the end of my own saga, awaiting the final curtain I possess the wisdom of hindsight. An anguished, 'if only' that I might have saved myself the suffering of all this time, had I known then what I know now. But what I know now is an affront to what I once was; a complete reversal of all my beliefs. That is how they operate: not by cloak and dagger, not in shadow and silence, but in broad daylight, with methods that leave us incredulous to their reality. A gigantic pickpocket using misdirection to swindle the masses.
Beware the devil you know: because the man downstairs doesn't wear horns and a tail. He's the guy with a corporate badge and a suit, and he wants to tell you he doesn't exist. |
