Firstly with swing, look at the gridbaglayout - I find that usually behaves more, or again with swing the Box layout can actually work out quite well. Also, and I know you said not to sugest swing aleternatives, but is there a reason you cannot use SWT? I ask because the tool support in eclipse is very good, and in my experinece it is much faster, and the layout behaves much more. Hope this is useful
