Hello, feel welcome and have a seat! This is the place to ask your questions.
If you want any beverage or food, we can get some from "Illiways" (our café two top level threads earlier) or even better, visit it yourself and meet the friendly Illiways proprietor and denizens.
Repost: Girls, Women, UFies and unregistered readers who feel addressed and want to spread the word:
Today April 26th (Thursday) is "Girls' Day" in some places in Europe - but why not cross borders? Girls' Day is meant to inform preteens and teenager girls on (sometimes traditionally male-dominated) opportunities in education, profession, jobs, occupations, activities, ... The U.S. also invites boys and calls it "Daughters And Sons To Work" Day (see links further down).
So: Girls, today you are hereby politely invited to ask what you want to know about IT, computer science etc.. Of course anyone else who's curious can join in. Most of us UFies here are proficient in information technology (IT), i.e. computer science and everything related; hardware, software, networks and other professions in or related to that field. Most (have) work(ed) in IT and/or do it as a hobby. Some work in other fields of sciences, bio, maths and more. Some are or were in the army, police or other law enforcement. We have students who can tell you how studying is like. And many more proffessional areas I just can't think of right now. So don't hesitate, you can only get answers if you ask questions first ;)
No kidding, in my own professional IT training I was outrun by a female classmate: she was better in school and in practise, so when they decided whom to hire permanently, they choose her. (I'm not sad, it was fair competition.) I reckon that you, too, have or want to develop skills, qualities and abilites. And that some company, institution or other potential employer is looking for or willing to teach you, train you on and maybe employ you, now or later in your life. Or you will even run your own business! And we guys also want more women and girls around, it's getting a little one-sided without your input ;)
How to post on the forum: basic registration is free of cost, no personal information needed. If you still feel afraid, you can email to my username (without blanks but with the dot) at gmail.com and I will post your question without your name or email address here and send answers back. You can also read the answers online here, if you want. But actually you don't need to be afraid, this is a civilised forum and we have moderators who watch the board. Your username doesn't need to match your real life name, that is to say you can post anonymously.
I'll be online up to ~03:00 UF board time, but you will also find helpful UFies here. I will also return in the evening and tomorrow and answer anything that's left open (if at all), so no need to worry about lost questions. If anyone is peeved by your asking, don't care, blame it on me and tell them to talk to me ;) There's a thread in my
Diary which will still be open after today if some idea or question pops up in your mind later. And the main discussion board (just click on the comic strip at the top) is always open for anyone 24/7. We are UserFriendly after all :)
All other UFies: please spread the word, especially if you know girls that are interested or yet undecided which direction to take. If you are located in Europe and this day is celebrated in your country, look out (search engines, local media) for events. I have no idea if this brings any specific echo at all here and it's a bit spontaneous, too, but let's just give it a try.
