Us people outside China just haven't heard about it until now. It's been going on for as long as I can remember. My family is from Hong Kong and still keeps in touch with news out of there; there are stories about poisons getting into food all the time. Whenever we buy Asian imported foods we try to avoid products that come from Mainland China and instead try to buy stuff from Taiwan or Korea or Vietnam, etc. The contamination isn't always about sabotage, it's sometimes about the company's bottom line. The comment in the article linked yesterday about how the contaminant in this wheat gluten had the effect of "increased" protein count showing in tests made me think of that.
