Similar in the UK.
When I was made redundant, the final cheque included pay for the notice period and unused holiday time, all taxed at source (UKspeak for witheld).
It also included the statutory rendundancy payment, which was not taxed.
Next time I filed a tax return, I hoped for a refund; but no, I'd forgotten about the tax on the redundancy payment. Turned out I owed them £383 + change.
Not a vast amount of money, but can be trouble if you're short.
These days, I keep something in reserve.
