I'm a lifetime member of Hostelling International, and I just got a mailing from them. They're trying to get the post office to issue a stamp to celebrate their 100th anniversary, and part of the process is demonstrating public support. They're asking members to send them postcards, which they will collect and present to the Postmaster General.
For those of you not familiar with the hostelling phenomena, they offer dormitory-style housing for anywhere from twelve to thirty dollars a night, depending on location. Some are open 24 hours while others are closed during the day. Most have a full kitchen and space to store grocery-store-bought food, so that you can also eat for a lot cheaper than eating out would be. They're located close to public transportation, often in the heart of downtown in major cities, places it would normally be far too expensive for many people to visit. The terms "youth hostel" and "elder hostel" are popular, but most don't actually have any age restrictions.
Hostels have allowed me to see a lot more of the country than I ever could have if I had to pay hotel prices, or even motel prices, for a bed to sleep in. When I was in school, and shortly thereafter, I was able to attend conferences and visit friends despite having very little in the way of cash.
If you can spare a few minutes and a few cents, please dig out one of those postcards you've picked up but never sent, and mail a note of support to:
