Ordnance-Corner for UFies by Ordnance_Corner 2007-04-20 09:35:17
The intent of Ordnance-Corner is to develop, refine, and disseminate those techniques, procedures, and equipment which enable an individual to most effectively employ a firearm in the purpose for which it was intended.

The Four Rules of Firearms Handling
by Jeff Cooper

Rule 1
All guns are always loaded

Rule 2
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not prepared to destroy

You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

Rule 3
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target

This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

Rule 4
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it

You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

---------------------------
Originally we had added additional rules to these. Recently someone pointed out the following to me from Coopers Comentaries Volume 11, #13:
It is a continuing annoyance to see people messing around with the safety rules. The four that have been developed over the years suffice entirely as now stated. There is no need for more, and we really cannot get by with fewer. However, some half-educated enthusiasts keep trying to make up a new set, or to add or subtract, which does nothing but serve to confuse matters. A major point of issue is Rule 1, "All guns are always loaded." There are people who insist that we cannot use this because it is not precisely true. Some guns are sometimes unloaded. These folks maintain that the rule should read that one should always treat all guns as if they were loaded. The trouble here is the "as if," which leads to the notion that the instrument at hand may actually not be loaded. This leads to disaster, yet we hear it all the time. Sometimes it appears we become so obsessed with the ephemeral goal of safety that we lose sight of the purpose of the exercise. Safety is not first. Safety is second. Victory (or success) is first.
Therefore instead we add the following precautions.
---------------------------

Additional precautions by DesertRat66 and UFie readers of Ordnance-Corner:

Precaution #1
Be sure your guns are never accessible to unauthorized or untrained individuals

Precaution #2(The Dick Cheney Rule)
Alcohol and Guns in any quantity DO NOT mix
If you take even a sip of an alcoholic bevereage your are done handling firearms for the day. If you wake up with a hangover DO NOT handle firearms. Firearms are extremely dangerous devices where even a millisecond of inattention can get someone killed or seriously injured.
