It's the fact that the server has anti-leech protection enabled. If you clicked through from UF to the image, the referrer was UF and so the server denied the request (as being from an invalid referrer). Changing to the IE engine means that the link will be re-requested using IE, and without the referrer(You didn't click an link in IE to get there, so IE won't send the referrer for the page the link was on) so the server will assume you just entered it into the address bar and send the image properly.

I had the same thing here until I worked it out - the link in Opera didn't work, but copying the url into Firefox worked fine. Copying it back into Opera also worked fine when I realised...
