Why? Because when reading, I want to be able to keep scrolling in the same direction. Now, when I reach the bottom of the first column, I have to scroll up to move to the top of the second column. Then there is the fact that most news items are wider than they are tall. This creates a horizontal dynamic, and I find myself first finishing a block in the left column, then moving to the block next to it in the right column.
