The two columns LOOK good, but having both old and new content at the top is counter-intuitive, probably to many if not most. I'm not sure that going left-to-right with it would be any better for most (most recent top-left, 2nd most recent top-right, 3rd most recent 2nd-from-top-left, etc). So that leaves only single-column for the news items. Maybe the 2-column will grow on people.

I don't envy the task of getting it looking good as well as functional. Style vs functionality is always a big trade-off game.

And GAH! Yellow and orange! *covers eyes*
