Good Friday question by toysbfun2007-04-06 10:36:40
As I understand it, the reasoning is thus: by Kickstart 2007-04-06 11:11:05
while Jesus was given extraordinary powers and wisdom during his life as a man on Earth, he was just a man on Earth. He was not, during that time, omniscient nor omnipotent. And during the crucifixion, he experienced all the suffering of Man, and part of that suffering was the experience of the complete extent of it, including despair and abandonment.

Of course, I don't believe in God, nor in the divinity of Jesus (though I accept his literal existence), so take my view with a pillar...err...grain of salt.
