i'm looking at 2 distinct questions less from a legal stand point and more from a responsible use and civic ethic standpoint.

we *do* license pools in a lot of communities. (i didnt' even bother takign the quiz) often involving fences.

i'm looking at 2 distinct ideas

1) make it very easy for any citizen who is reasonably sane (i.e. not declared nutty by the state) and can show a reasonable level of understanding of firearm safety to own anything they want.

2) why do we not license individual instances (per firearm) like we do with other potentially hazardous items? specifically significantly MORE hazardous ones. which would you consider a greater mechanisim of defence against a government? a 1911 or 500 pounds of high explosive? the gun you have to go through a lot of paperwork to get, the other is a trip to the farm supply store. the gun will have no functional trace, the anfo micro tags in the fertilizer.
