have one of the worst IT groups I've ever heard of. But I mostly have worked for larger organizations; the smallest that I ever worked for was about 400 employees. When you are dealing with that size outfit, you simply can't function without having at least some of the basics in place, like backup systems, firewalls, antivirus, email restrictions, etc.
Perhaps in an environment of a dozen people or so, you can actually have the techs following around after the users, cleaning up after them. But in a larger corporation, the users quickly discover that there are only so many techs to go around. When one tech (that would be me) is supporting 600 desktop or laptop users at minimum (more if one of the other two techs on my team is on vacation), there's no time for hand-holding. And other than sales people who just wouldn't "take the time" to run their weekly backups (which takes all of 15 minutes, and can be run any time day or night!) no one has lost any significant data. And no sales person has done it twice ;) |
