I worked for a company that wrote data backup software specific for the end user's desktop. But it required hella storage and generally wasn't worth it. The big places generally don't do it that way, having been inside the IT group of SimplexGrinnell, Thomas & Betts, Tyco, etc. It's all about network-based storage that the user is responsible for.
