they ought to, but here it goes:
The techs ARE responsible for having a system in place. Some (definitely not all!) organizations have made it impossible to store data locally, and it is the administrators' responsibility to make sure that backups are done on servers and the network shares. Similarly, they need to provide a functioning system for storage of data on local machines, such as laptops, when the users work in non-networked environments (such as field representatives).
BUT
Users who store their data on their local drives, and who have a backup system available to them for those drives, and who ignore the company policy requiring them to use these backups need to be held responsible for their data. This includes storing data in the correct locations (such as My Documents or their Desktop)instead of leaving it a hodgepodge of files on the root of C: or some folder they created without paying any attention to the backup policy. It includes using the backup procedures that are made available to them. It means they cannot treat the company computer as their personal property and ignore the tools made available to them for the protection of data.
Bottom line: Employees (non-techs) are adults, and are expected to take care of company assets. Those who won't use systems available should be subject to discipline. At the companies where I've worked, depending on how often Stef had done this, he could be fired for this lapse. It's the same thing as leaving the laptop on the seat of the car and not locking the doors or concealing it. It's irresponsible. |
