But they often don't. I can't blame them either, no one can think of everything, especially if this isn't that person's main job. Many people think stuff is done automatically or that something isn't needed. Which is why a sysadmin should at the very least offer to set up a backup. In short, while users should take care of their data, you can't rely on them and so it's sysadmin's responsibility to ensure safety of important data (among other things).
