As JayFarm stated, there's always that moron/jerk/whatever that refuses to comply with corporate policy of saving things in corporate approved manners. We just had someone on my campus lose 6 software projects that he was working on because he went all cowboy on us and decided he was going to work entirely off of his laptop! Not only did he refuse to use the containers that were set up for his source code, he set up his own repository and used it entirely locally on his laptop cuz he didn't like the lag he had to deal with when he VPN'd in from home. Now he's out a job, and his manager's future is under review atm for not doing something about it before disaster struck.
In other places I've set up systems for, I've set up triple redundant systems to protect data. All the user has to do is save stuff to their My Documents folder, where these things are supposed to go(!) and it's automatically backed up to the server, where it's copied to another drive array, then backed up onto tape. You wouldn't believe how many people would still save things to their desktops!! How hard is it to save your important documents in My Documents, where you've been told a million times is where you HAVE to put them, and then create a shortcut to it on the desktop? I hate to sound callous, but I have a deep resounding hatred for users sometimes. (Can you tell I work a helpdesk right now? That should be reason enough to take this with a grain of salt.) ;) |
