When I talked to him (her dad) about it, that's how he explained it, too.
"God tells us to be prepared, to be self-sufficient, to not be a burden upon others & to offer a hand when we can."
I had helped him do one of his month's-end baking sessions where all the stuff to be rotated-out got cooked & replaced.
The cooked stuffs (loaves of bread, HUGE tureens of stew, etc) were distributed through their LDS Church to the homeless/needy, and if any of the other Members needed a helping hand, he'd make them a "care package" of a couple hundred pounds of dry goods.
(Shaking his head in awe)
That man had a heart the size of a planet, and even though his daughter & I split up, I kinda wish he'd been a little more forgiving (of the fact that I didn't want to join the Church).
