"I thank you for your assistance yesterday, and while I would enjoy becoming friends with you, I'm not interested in joining your religion. I think we could have much to share with each other & a pleasant friendship could become of it, but I have no plants on joining a Church."
If they've got the brains $Deity gave a gnat, they'll understand & accept your position.
If they don't, then... well... (Shrugs, smiles sadly)
I once dated a young Mormon Lady and told her that very thing.
I did not mind that she had her Faith, and wouldn't mind knowing her as a friend, but I wasn't interested in religion or joining a Church.
She accepted it, and we dated for a number of years before she decided that she couldn't continue the relationship if I wasn't willing to convert.
(Sighs, shaking his head, shrugs)
I lost a very nice friend, but I understand and accept her position.
Her father was Stake President & she (eventually) wanted to get married in the Temple, which wouldn't have been possible if I wasn't also of the Faith.
She reached a point where, either I converted, or she had to "release me" so she could let her heart find someone within the Faith.
I was sorry to see her go, but joining the LDS Church was *not* gonna happen. <8-(
BUT, as friends, she was a very nice person and I learned a lot from her. =)
(Did you know that the LDS Faith requires Mormons to stockpile food in case of emergency? Her dad had over FOUR TONS of dried/dry/canned foods that he rotated out on a monthly basis to keep it all fresh & viable. Wheat, Flour, Rice, you name it! When I saw the bunker, I was awed!)
