A leader can be of the most magnificent greatness, but will fail for sure when he wants to realize an idea whose time has not yet come. The fertile ground for the idea must be provided somehow, and the really great person can see more clearly that the seed is now ready to be planted. For example, I can imagine no person who would have been able to abolish slavery in the roman empire. It would have been impossible. Even for somebody with the skills as leader and charisma of Augustus, for example. Humanity needed to wait a lot more years.
