how convincing an argument is should depend on your preconceived views. If it can only convince people who already agree with it, then it's either poorly written or poorly thought out (or the people disagreeing are either poor thinkers or very stubborn).

I actually don't enjoy reading essays (or similar things) when I agree with the author's position from the beginning. This is why I never bothered to watch Fahrenheit 911, for example - watching it would be just an exercise in patting myself on the back for already knowing how evil certain political groups were.
