We learn about the deeds of great men in history class. How Columbus crossed the Atlantic and found America. How Napoleon conquered and unified most of Europe. How Martin Luther King became a great leader for social change.

These great leaders could never have done anything without the support of the people following them. So if they hadn't been there, would those people have found someone else very similar to follow - say a Rosa Parks instead of a Martin Luther King. Or another nobleman who would lead armies and unify Europe. Or another merchant mariner who would dare sail west into uncharted waters?

In the words of Heinlein: "When it is time to railroad, people railroad". When the people are ready for something a leader will arise to show the way.

Or alternatively, if it weren't for great leaders, people who were willing to take a chance, people who were able to make a difference, where would we be today?

Which is more important? A great leader, or a people ready to make something happen.
