The chances of getting that higher paying job are lower. I don't know about your area but, in sourthern California, people are taking starting wages that are really low to get the job because there is so much "earning potential." The trouble is the company doesn't give significant raises. They wait for you to quit and then higher the next guy willing to take a low starting wage.

I would really keep your current job as long as it is practical while setting yourself up for your next career.
