Night school to finish degree by jdelphiki 2007-03-05 08:15:02
Getting the degree sooner will get it all out of your way, but I don't see it as necessary if you're already working in the field.

In my experience, most companies prefer real world experience to degrees. They *want* their developers to have degrees, but they don't actually ask their developers to do anything that makes use of what they were taught in college. ;) (Unless, of course, colleges have somehow started teaching relevant, real world technical courses for software developers).

Even if you end up having to find a job while you're going for your night school degree, most prospective employers will value your experience more...especially when you can tell them that you're working toward a degree.

And staying at your present, above average income, you'll not likely be hit too hard on the capped salary between now and the time you finish your degree.

A word of warning...you might find that your current company will not want to automatically upgrade your salary to reflect your degreed status. Many companies are stingy that way. You might want to find out what their policy is so you'll know whether or not to stay with your company after you get your degree or move on to a company who won't leave you in the capped position.
