Depending on the specifications, it might also be more advisable to still return a value, even if there are problems or exceptions.

E.g. when I have a program that evaluates 1253 gazillion values and has to display them, and at value number 155 gazillion there might be a problem I usually code it in a was that null, "#ERROR#", or something like that is returned and displayed instead of bailing out.
