First a blank will not operate any semi-automatic unless that gun is unable to fire normal ammunition. Now you could use a revolver and be fine, but you have now sacrificed 17 to 20% of your available firepower to scare someone who may not fear for their own safety or be jacked up on drugs. Second most defensive encounters are close, some at smell your breath distance. You may have one shot only, it'd better count. I'd like to add one more piece of information. The general rule of thumb WRT using a firearm in self-defense is only when you are of reasonable belief that life or severe bodily harm is imminent.
