This sounds like a good argument for the defense. Nowhere in the scenario is it mentioned if 'Joan' did live in a media void. More precisely, there is no mention of media coverage. As for general law, the liability for bad food lies with the producer, not the distributor. So long and the distributor made no changes to the product they are protected. They bought the product from the producer "in good faith" and conveyed it to 'Joan' unaltered. That's mainly why product recalls that are reported in the news usually start "the maker of $product has announced a recall...".
IMHO, the store would only be liable if they were the ONLY conduit of communication between the maker and 'Joan'.
