They do run a full criminal check on you before they sign you up these days. They'll ignore most anything you may have, but if you're wanted for a capital offence, they'll send you away. I think they found that too many of the people joining up were hard criminals who wound up doing the wrong things after they were in, and hurting the Legion.
when you get out, you get the option of a new identity, and French citizenship, and I believe they destroy all records they have of who you were, and place all their stuff under your new ID.
