That was a very useful post. Thank you. I like productive discussions. :D
I think the preconception that I had run away with was that of "Daddy can handle a gun, therefore daughter must carry one for self-protection, even though she doesn't really know how to use it", which is obviously dangerous for everyone involved. However, as you point out, that wasn't actually the thrust of the initial concept, which was for competent and willing people to have the right to defend themselves.
In the right hands, guns are very useful; I especially like the DD/DS concept. I'd never heard of that before, but I shall practice it now. Well actually I do already (I don't drink, and I live in England so I can't carry a firearm, but I do tend to keep my head up, especially when my friends and other innocents are around).
The thing I find annoying about the whole firearms situation is that they actually *could* be useful and an asset to public/individual safety. If they're in the right hands. But I've seen how people handle cars, and therefore I've lost all faith in the competence of the general public.
One other thing; what happens if there are multiple perpetrators and/or him/one of them pulls a gun on you? |
