Some folks have guns because they enjoy shooting them, either recreationally or competitively.

Others own them because they hunt - my sister's family does this, and it's not just for sport, as they eat what they kill.

Still others lack the faith you have in humanity's better instincts, and so believe that having a firearm is far better protection against the baser elements of our species than the police.
